Most things I do take much longer than I expect. My dad always said “double it.” That is, no matter how much time you think something will take, just double it.
As I get older, it’s easier to calibrate the length of time it takes to accomplish certain tasks. And some tasks are just more predictable than others. For me, the 1) newer, 2) more abstract, and 3) more technical the task, the longer it’s likely to take.
My friend Philip goes by the 3x rule.
For designing and launching a website, I’d probably go with that. For writing a post like this, it might be the 0.2x rule.
And for coming up with a brand new idea that’ll forever change my business, it’s more likely the 100x rule.
Maybe my dad’s advice – to just “double it” – averages out over time, but overall I’m pretty bad at guessing. But showing up to do the most important work is really all that matters. If it’s important, I normally find time. And if it’s important and I can’t find time, something is wrong with my priorities.
