The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is today.

This is an old Chinese proverb, and you’ve probably heard it at some point.

I only say it because it’s continually proven true in my life.

The only problem with the saying is the presumption that you could’ve known to plant a tree 20 years ago, but maybe you thought it better to plant flowers, or you were focused on the booming cannabis industry.

If we replace “tree planting” with just about any other activity that takes years to pay off, it’s a hard decision to start and keep it up. The problem with the metaphor is planting a tree is a one-time event; taking care of the tree is the real work.

What are you doing that’ll pay off after years of work and repetition?
