Everything can be broken down into smaller building blocks of the whole. Matter can be broken down to molecules, atoms, protons and electrons, and even quarks (the components of a proton).
A business can be broken down into three central components: get attention (marketing), get customers (sales), make good on the promise (delivery). Each of the three components can be broken apart into smaller components, but marketing, sales, and delivery are the key variables that change a business.
For a business to grow, one of the areas affecting revenue must improve. When a business stagnates, something is wrong with one of the variables. Systems thinking means knowing which variables to work with, and when.
Business can seem infinitely complicated, but it’s really about successfully pulling the right levers to make small improvements.
