The Helping Rule
It’s tempting to ask for help, and we all need it from time to time. Our lives aren’t perfect, and we’re constantly on the lookout for “better.” Better career, better relationships, better health.
There’s a big conclusion here: if we’re on the lookout for better, so is everyone else.
Instead of asking “what do I need,” ask “what can I give.” This simple question should guide you: “how can I help?”
That means asking yourself “how is this helpful?” before you make any attempt to sell or market, or otherwise ask for help yourself. If you do, you’ll be forced to think about making other people better, and that’s the definition of value.
So the more helpful you are, the more valuable you are. That’s how to approach your relationships.
