How to Make Your Interactions Feel Authentic

I had a conversation today. The person I spoke to attended a webinar I hosted, then emailed me after. I picked up the phone and called him to see if there was anything I could do to help.

Shortly after we hung up, he asked the question:

What was your motivation for calling?

It felt very authentic. I always feel a bit skeevy when connecting with people, but I aim to be as authentic as our call felt.

And here’s the answer: it felt authentic because it was authentic.

I had no expectations of the call and genuinely picked up the phone to see if there was anything I could do to help him. Other than a friendly conversation, there wasn’t. There was no pressure to buy, sell, refer business, or the like. The goal of the call was for me to say “how can I help?”

So if you’re wondering how to make your calls feel authentic, ask a different question: “How can I be authentic the next time I have a call?”
